USA Agriculture : The 200-Year Fight
The timeline outlines the extensive history of African American farmers from the 1800s to the present, beginning with their essential role as enslaved agricultural specialists who built the U.S. economy. It tracks the period of Reconstruction and Black agrarian independence, highlighting the peak around 1900 when hundreds of thousands owned significant acreage. The source then details the severe era of dispossession and discrimination spanning from 1910 to 1965, marked by systematic land loss, white terrorism, and exclusion from New Deal programs.
Following decades of decline and legal challenges, the timeline focuses on the successful Pigford class action settlements in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which officially recognized USDA racial bias. Meet The Pioneers
Marc Steward is leading an initiative to develop community solar microgrids that empower African American farmers, ranchers, and landowners across the Black Belt, beginning in Alabama. By building the largest African American–owned solar cooperative, this effort will deliver clean, affordable energy directly to local communities and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The project strengthens rural infrastructure, creates economic opportunity in disadvantaged areas, and ensures that farmers and families share in the benefits of renewable energy ownership.
